A particular and intriguing case is the Mn dimer case. We show here that the existing theories for inelastic transport spectroscopy do not explain the observed spin transitions when both atoms are equally coupled to the scanning tunneling microscope tip and the substrate, the most likely experimental situation. The hyper ne coupling to the nuclear spins is shown to lead to a nite excitation amplitude, but the physical mechanism leading to the large inelastic signal observed is still unknown. We discuss some other alternatives that break the symmetry of the system and allow for larger excitation probabilities.

Adsorbed states and scanning tunneling microscopy
The authors have studied adsorption of acetylene on Cu͑110͒ by means of low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. Adsorbed molecules preferentially aggregate at 40 K to yield dimer, trimer, and larger islands on the surface. Isolated species ͑monomer͒ adsorbs on the fourfold hollow site with ϳsp 3 rehybridization as characterized by inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy. Tunneling electron...

I show that recent experiments of inelastic scanning tunneling spectroscopy of single and a few magnetic atoms are modeled with a phenomenological spin-assisted tunneling Hamiltonian so that the inelastic dI/dV line shape is related to the spin spectral weight of the magnetic atom. This accounts for the spin selection rules and dI/dV spectra observed experimentally for single Fe and Mn atoms de...

We report the synthesis of a room temperature ferromagnetic Mn-Ge system obtained by simple deposition of manganese on Ge(001), heated at relatively high temperature (starting with 250 °C). The samples were characterized by low energy electron diffraction (LEED), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS)...
متن کاملAtomic structure of Mn wires on Si(001) resolved by scanning tunneling microscopy.
At submonolayer coverage, Mn forms atomic wires on the Si(001) surface oriented perpendicular to the underlying Si dimer rows. While many other elements form symmetric dimer wires at room temperature, we show that Mn wires have an asymmetric appearance and pin the Si dimers nearby. We find that an atomic configuration with a Mn trimer unit cell can explain these observations as due to the inter...

Inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy is a powerful spectroscopy that allows one to investigate the nature of local excitations and energy transfer in the system of interest. We study inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy for topological insulators and investigate the role of inelastic scattering on the Dirac node states on the surface of topological insulators. Local inelastic scatteri...
